Gratitude – Why we photograph our lives

The truth is, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to do the work that I love to do and to have such wonderful clients. And I often think about how that gratitude is really all an extension of why I am a photographer in the first place. I’m grateful for my life – for my husband and my children, for the moments that have combined to make us, well, US. It’s that gratitude that inspires me to pick up my camera with my own loved ones. Don’t get me wrong – we’re a normal family. We have our moments, but all in all I am truly thankful for most all of it, and I want them to know that, too. I’m fairly convinced that portraits remind us and our children just how important they are to us. How proud we are of their milestones and their moments. How loved they were and are at any given stage of their lives. This is why I photograph my family, and why I hope that you photograph yours, too. And it’s also why I love being able to create portraits and canvases for my clients. These are your moments. And I’m so grateful to be a part of it.

Tips for Choosing Your Newborn Photographer

Your newborn photography session should be one of the sweetest experiences of your brand new life as a mom or dad. Capturing everything that is perfect, tiny, and wonderful about your new baby and your relationship with him or her, those newborn photos will likely be some of the most treasured you will ever have. This is why finding and hiring an established and trusted professional for your newborn session is so important. Because your baby is only this little once.

When considering which professional to choose, here are a few bits of advice.

  1. Choose someone whose work you truly love, and whose style seems clean and timeless. Trust me on this – there is nothing about a newborn image that needs the colors or contrast outrageously enhanced. Newborn images shouldn’t “pop”. This is your sweet, brand-new baby. He’s perfect just the way he is. Furthermore, some of the trendy types of processing will be totally out of date in 5 or 10 years, but a clean, sweet image will NEVER go out of style.
  2.  Once you’ve found someone whose work is what you envision on your own walls, look to see if they show plenty of images from each session, rather than just one or two. The truth is, anyone can get lucky and get one really good shot. But it takes a higher level of skill and/or talent to get an entire gallery of great shots. And let’s face it – you WANT a gallery of images to choose from. Ideally, you want to be able to see anywhere from 10-15 images from a single client gallery to get an idea of whether the photographer can provide a gallery of images to you. Be sure to look for a variety of poses and setups, and that everything looks safe*.  (* Bonus points if they have years of experience posing newborns)
  3. Lastly, as soon as you’ve found your pro, contact them and get that session scheduled! An established professional who specializes in newborns like I do is very likely to be booked solid for up to a month, and possibly even several months, in advance. I recommend that clients contact me sometime in their 2nd trimester to book their sessions, but even if it’s later than that I will do everything I can to get them in for their newborn session. I want every client to have beautiful, special images of this amazing time in their life.

I know that there are so many things on your “to do” list. And hiring a trusted professional for your newborn’s photos is one thing you will never regret doing. Your baby is only this little once!
