If you are like most parents of a newborn, you are probably pretty tired. Those first days and weeks can be a blur. And sometimes the hectic schedule that comes with a newborn means that other things become less of a priority, or are forgotten about altogether. Like newborn photos. Some parents have religious reasons for staying at home for this period. Some new moms may have more soreness than they expected, or sometimes life feels a bit overwhelming with a newborn. Whatever the reason, a professional newborn photographer should be able to work with you at any time in the first month (at least!) and provide you with beautiful images of your newborn. And over the past 6 years, we have worked with so many of these older babies that we confidently assure parents that beautiful newborn sessions are possible at our studio with newborns of any age.
The newborn period is considered by most to be the first 4 weeks, and it’s true that some poses are going to take a bit longer with a 4 or 5 week old baby than with one that is 8 or 10 days old. Some will not settle as easily, or tolerate as many transitions from one pose into another. Older newborns are also typically less able to curl up as much as a younger newborn. They are generally a bit more round in the middle, and are often just not as flexible. And because babies older than about 12 days do more flexing of their legs and backs, some poses are not recommended or attempted. As long as our clients understand that there are greater limitations, and are able to adjust their expectations, we are happy – no, we are MORE than happy to schedule their older newborn. Because when it comes down to it, we would rather our clients have those beautiful photos than none at all. We would rather work harder and make that happen, than to see even one client go without a session simply because their baby was a bit older.
Yes, I am still going to recommend that clients book their session with me BEFORE they have their babies. We often do get a bigger variety of curled-up poses, and parents have the assurance of having a session on the schedule, which is not always possible when someone contacts me after their baby has arrived. Sometimes there are openings, due to a reschedule or a baby who has decided not to arrive by his or her due date, but not always. (So, if you haven’t had your baby yet, right now would be a great time to shoot me an email. 😉 ) But if you’ve had your baby, and if life has gotten a bit crazy for you with a newborn in the home, well go ahead and contact me! I will do my very best to make a spot for your precious baby. He or she deserves beautiful newborn photos, too. Your baby is only this little once.
